Scientists often stick to scientific names, two-word names that are attached to individual described species.
It is maddening to me because they are lying on their backs, moving their legs. The green June bugs DO make a sort of noise, but it’s the buzzing noise of their wings and not a call like you get with the cicadas. Yay for flying June bugs around like kites! I saw one of these swarms and it was crazy. I’d been told what these insects were upon arriving in West Texas, but didn’t know too much more than that about the hapless things as they zinged into the lights I leave on at night outside the house. We grew up calling the Japanese beetle June bugs…. Earlier in the summer they’re light brown but of late I’ve noticed they’re a darker brown color. I really enjoyed it. The green ones I always called a Scarab. I spent my summers growing up in rural West Virginia. I was going nuts looking for an answer to this!

Yes, this is one instance where you’re both right! :). Ha ha! then i have a light out there and there were flying things around the light. If you are outside during this invasion, they will pelt you like little drunk kamikazes. They might look like the June bugs my dad grew up with, but my June bugs are not my dad’s June bugs! I live in western New York state. I don’t think you can say that June bugs are nitida and fig beetles are mutabilis because the choice to call one species or the other – or something completely different – a June bug is an individual choice that doesn’t have much to do with the scientific names.
I love hearing the different names people have for similar things! If you happen to check back, do you happen to know the species? St Louis Mo. The champion noisemaker of the insect world is the cicada. I think if you ask most other Arizonans (and I’ve asked A LOT of them) you’ll find the same thing. It is like they are determined to die.

About 1/2 inch in size. Loved doing that. I’ve been in Tucson 3 summers and this is the first year my house has been covered with these reddish-brown beetle-like bugs. They sounds like they might be ten lined June beetles!

Felt sorry for them as I observed them crashing into walls, trees, or people. June bugs are generally any metallic scarab, but usually the fig beetle. We’d take turns holding the other end while the ‘June Bug’ randomly flew here & yon. Dragonflies have official common names in the US, but even so the wandering glider (Pantala flavescens) is often called a hurricane fly or a globe skimmer, both in the US and in other countries.
